Translated from the Greek by Paul Merchant
28 pages / hand-stitched, limited-edition pamphlet / $10.00
Yannis Ritsos (1909-1990) was one of most inimitable, prolific, and revered poets of the 20th century. Paul Merchant's translation of Twelve Poems About Cavafy first appeared in Ted Hughes and Daniel Weissbort's Modern Poetry in Translation series in 1968. Merchant's translation, newly revised for this edition, is complemented by a thoughtful afterword that tracks the roots of this poetic sequence and its journey from Greek to English.
In this edition, 26 copies have been hand-bound into cloth-covered boards and signed by the translator. $75. For order inquiries, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Paul Merchant was born in Wales and studied at Cambridge, The Shakespeare Institute, and the University of Athens. After teaching for many years at the University of Warwick, he now lives with his wife Grace in Portland, Oregon, where he is William Stafford Archivist at Lewis & Clark College.
